July 2007 Searches

July 23,2007                                     East of Ashton

Fremont Rescue responded to a report of a body found in the hydroelectric canal grate on the Fall River, 6 miles east of Ashton.

The man's vehicle was discovered approximately 5 miles east of where his body was discovered. Apparently, he was attempting to get his vehicle turned around, back up onto the road when he slipped & was unable to pull himself out of the canal due to the steep banks and swift waters.

Two Fremont Rescue divers were able to recover the body.

July 27, 2007                                     Box Canyon, Island Park

Fremont Rescue was called out when a canoe overturned and one person could not be accounted for. That individual was located approximately 45 minutes later.

July 28 - 29, 2007                         Riverside Campground, Island Park

Fremont Rescue was dispatched to Island Park, to rescue a family (2 adults with 2 small children, ages 4 & 6 )  who were floating the river in a paddle boat and they missed their pull-out.  They proceeded downstream, entering some severe rapids, nearly capsizing their boat. They ended up on the bank of the wrong side of the river and due to the fast moving water, they couldn't cross over to the other side.

None of the family members, from Idaho Falls, were wearing their life jackets.

Rescue members struggled getting lines strung across the 100 ft. wide river, to attach our catamaran using rigging and pulleys.

The rescue took approximately seven hours and a lot of effort.

Reminder... ALWAYS wear life vests, even for a short enjoyable outing. You never know what dangers lie around a missed corner!
