July 2008 Searches July 21, 2008 Coffee Pot, Island Park Fremont County Search and Rescue received information of an upturned blue canoe on Henry’s Fork of the Snake River below Coffee Pot Rapids in Island Park. Members responded to the report because something flesh toned color was noticed on the underside of the overturned canoe. Not knowing whether the canoe had wandered away from its owner or if somebody had plunged over the rapids and not yet been reported missing, members rode 4 wheelers as far as possible to the river and then hiked downstream roughly 1300 feet over downfall, rocks and other debris to the canoe’s location. The flesh toned color under the canoe turned out to be a canoe paddle. Using ropes, hook, pulleys, carabineers, webbing, and lots of manpower, the canoe was pulled upstream to a spot where it could be retrieved from the river. It was determined the canoe was most likely an escapee from someone’s dock, and the owner was not aware it had gone astray. The canoe was a total loss.
The Fremont County Sheriffs office has possession of the canoe if someone wants to claim it. 208-624-4428
