November 21, 2010 Big Grassy Road
Just before 4PM, Sunday evening, 17 Fremont County Search & Rescue Members and 3 Jr. S&R Members responded to the Big Grassy Road off the Red Road to the report of stuck hunters. A 53 year old Blackfoot man, a 34 year old Pocatello man, and his 9 year old son were hunting for elk when their pickup became stuck in the sand and they called 911 for help. The snow was coming down pretty steady and they were instructed to stay with the vehicle to stay warm. With the use of a computer based mapping program and GPS coordinates, the Commander directed 3 teams of S&R Members to the location of the stuck vehicle. Contact was made around 7pm, the hunters were in good condition but they were thirsty, water was given. Using several 4 Wheel Drive pickups with tow straps and tow chains, S&R were able to free the stuck pickup and caravan style, led them back to the Base Camp. As the S&R was responding to this callout a man was seen walking south on the Red Road, one of the S&R Members stopped and inquired why he was walking out in the weather. He was informed that the walking individual had lost the track on his snowmobile. The member gave him a ride back to where the rest of his party was parked, and then continued on to the original search.
